My own "Tough Enough"
by Brandon Smith on 2001-08-17

If I can be serious for a moment......

My column is kind of difficult to write this week. Many of you have probably heard, but my fellow House of Pain student, Iven Carlson passed away last Monday in a horrible accident. I felt I would share some of my thoughts about this.

I really only knew Iven for about three weeks. His body was menacing in size, just perfect for pro wrestling. He had a very extensive amateur background, as well. My fellow students will remember him for being somewhat brutal in the ring. He threw us around hard, being of his size, but he seemed like such an outgoing and caring person outside the ring. His death has hit quite close to home, as he was twenty years old, like myself, and was chasing his dream of being a pro wrestler, as well. I will regret not getting the chance to know him a little better, because he seemed to be a great person.

This event has put a lot of things into perspective. I feel very fortunate and thankful that I am in good health and am able to pursue my dream. Some people may be unable or are just unwilling to make the sacrifices to follow their passion.

In spite of this tragedy, I do feel I am progressing quite well in school. I had the chance to work a mock match with another student, Dustin, on Thursday and I thought it was pretty good for what it was. Of course, I'm not at the level to call a match yet, so I got bumped around a bit and took the brunt of the offense, but it was a load of fun.

I have had the chance to do a couple arial moves as well. I nailed a few splashes in our ring, and got a rush. I tried a couple 450's on Tony's trampoline later, hurting my elbow and calf and somehow splitting my pants. Maybe I'll leave the flying to the birds....

Until next time, bruthas and sistahs....
